First of all we try to pick betas that have been doing very well before.
We realise that this makes it harder for our new fans to make it into betas,
but at the same time we really want to reward our biggest fans.
These people are about 5% of the applicants, so new fans really do have a chance of joining beta.
Second: we have a list of people that have written great bug reports for
our current games (Informative, reproducable, bug reports that are not
essays and that contains screenshots, saves and steps to reproduce).
This list is constantly growing. It is still a bit unfair as I (and the
rest of the QA team) do not have time to reproduce every single bug
report, and add talented people to the list. It is also unfair as you
can have bad luck and report something that has already been found...
But we are working on making it better.
Third: User data. Number of posts, how long you have been a forum user,
few or no infractions (If you do have infractions, you are not
automatically removed. It depends on what kind of infraction, and why
you got it. Everybody has a right to do something wrong once in a while,
but not to often). I have to say that we didn't disqualify anybody
because of the infractions this time.
Fourth: When I am looking at applications I start to chose from people
that have sent in a link to a proper bug report.
Fifth: Other. It depends on what you have written on your application,
which betas you have been on earlier, your motives, your computer
prestanda.
